Heinonen has headed the Vienna-based watchdog's all-important safeguards department, which is responsible for making sure that nuclear material is not used for weapons. He is perhaps the most high-profile official at the agency after Director General Yukiya Amano and led Iran and Syria investigations. IAEA spokeswoman Gill Tudor said Thursday July 1st, 2010 that Heinonen, 63, informed Amano of his resignation and that he was doing so for personal reasons.
